Science Fair Resources

Eligibility
All Northwood students are eligible and encouraged to enter the Northwood Science Fair.  Preparation for Northwood Fair usually begins in January with Parents' Night.  Science Fair booklets containing rules, procedures, and specific dates are sent home with students.  Finished projects are displayed at Northwood during March.

Resources
At Northwood Library, students have access to numerous science project books from which they may copy experiments.  Print resources may also be found at the Seminole Public Library and the Seminole State College Library.  Internet resources for science fair projects are also plentiful.  Examples include:

www.exploratorium.edu
www.hunkinsexperiments.com
www.yesmag.bc.ca/projects/projects.html

Consulting the Exhibitor Rules in the Student's Science Fair booklet is an important first step in selecting an experiment.

Displaying the Project
Students may order science fair project display boards through the Northwood Library.  Price details and the order form will be included in their Science Fair booklet.  Use of display boards is optional.

Student Parent Handbook

Handbooks are given to each student at the beginning of the school year and are previewed with them in their homeroom.  Copies are available at the Northwood office.  This handbook is a guide to provide students and parents familiarization with school policies and procedures and to give a general perspective of our school system.

Great Expectations Teaching Model

Northwood is a Great Expectations school.  We use the Great Expectations Teaching Model, drawing from many learning theories that encompass the very best of what is known about teaching today.  Basic Tenets of this model are as follows:

All Children Can Learn... William Glasser
Climate of Mutual Respect... Rensis Likert
Building Self-Esteem... Harris Clemes, Reynold Bean, Aminah Clark
Teaching Attitude and responsibility... Haim Ginott, John & Eunice Gilmore
High Expectations... Robert Rosenthal & Lemore Jacobson
Teacher Knowledge and Skill... Benjamin Bloom
